Recently I spoke to T Sandeman-Charles of Save 5 ( www.save5.org.uk )about her experience of being a stand holder at Royston Open Secrets 2011. If you’ve met T. you will know that she is an incredibly inspiring and happy person. She has two serious lung diseases. When she was diagnosed in January 2010, she decided to use her time encouraging people to become organ donors. Every person who signs-up can potentially save or transform 5 lives.
T’s first goal was to get 1,000 people to sign-up as organ donors and having achieved that she now wants to get 10,000 more people to register as we could then save or transform 50,000 lives.
T heard about the event from Royston Open Secrets Committee Member, Jayne Bratton. She became one of the 35 voluntary/community/charity groups who took part in the event alongside the 45 local businesses.
What made the event special for T was that she had the opportunity to talk about her appeal on the event’s ‘Speaker’s Corner’. As she said “Sometimes the stand can’t say everything that I want to say. It was so much better to be able to address everyone. And even better when, after I spoke, Fire Officer, Peter Chapman and several other speakers mentioned my appeal and sent people to my stand. It was amazing”.
T was awarded the “Best Stand” trophy by Michael Weeks, Chairman of North Herts District Council, and was very proud to accept it on behalf of all her supporters and suppliers, particularly C-lutions who printed her banner and Saffron Apparel who supplied the T-shirts. On the day, 122 people signed up and that’s the highest sign-up at a single event to date. She has now achieved 1,565 people who have registered as organ donors – that’s only 8,435 to go. So what are you waiting for?
I asked T if she would come to Royston Open Secrets again and she said “Yes, definitely. Book me in!”
